Chapter Twenty-Nine

Hunter didn’t have to think long. Within fifteen minutes, dark shapes were visible in the sky behind them. His early observation had been correct. Closer now, he could make out the large shapes. There were four of the giant flying creatures, and they could only be one thing: Rocs.

His HUD seemed to confirm that a moment later, when a new quest appeared.

New Quest received.

Quest: Survive the Roc Ambush

Description: A wing of Roc riders have found your position. Survive their assault by any means necessary.

Reward: 1 Karma point

Optional Reward: Assure Brandy survives, +1 Karma point.

Optional Reward: Discover how they tracked you and prevent them from doing it again, +1 Karma point.

Hunter read the quest several times. This new quest was unlike any he’d received before. First, the quest itself was odd. Survive the assault? Did the angel think he’d just roll over and let them kill him?

The second difference was the optional rewards. He’d never seen those before in a quest. Assure Brandy survived and discover how they had tracked him. He pondered the two optional rewards.

Hunter was to assure Brandy survived, but the optional said nothing about the knights. While he was all for saving the girl, he wondered why the quest had singled her out. Obviously, if she died, there would be no way for him to reach the tomb and get back in time to save Seacourt in the time allotted. But was there some other reason?

The last optional was just as interesting, too. Hunter had been wondering how the creatures had found him. He assumed they were tracking him somehow, but he had no idea how. He seriously doubted there were Apple AirTags in this world, let alone an iPhone to track them.

Hunter would have time to think about the new quest and optional rewards later. At the moment, he had bigger problems, four very large problems, and they were closing in rapidly.

He swore aloud this time, knowing it was too late for them to lose their pursuers and knowing he needed to warn them, even if it did blow his cover. “Rocs behind us!”

An annoyed expression passed over Sir Vallent’s face, but he glanced back. The knight did a double-take and lost his footing. He immediately toppled over. Unable to move, the knight was left behind as the group rocketed past him, still empowered by the Druid’s Walk.

“Light burn him!” Brandy growled and brought them to a halt. “What did he…”

The druid trailed off as her eyes caught dark shapes in the sky. “Great Earth Mother! Those are Rocs!”

The other knights had been looking down at the ground where Sir Vallent had fallen. They seemed to be about to start some good-natured ribbing when Brandy’s words registered, and they looked up.

“Blazes!” Sir Cristole yelled. The man immediately began pulling his shield off his back. After a moment of gawking at the incoming Rocs, the two brothers did the same.

By this time, Vallent had regained his feat. His armor was a bit dirty, but he seemed okay.
